This case is about TH, who is a 40-year-old accountant and who had worn glasses for short- sightedness for many years. When he came to discuss his vision frustrations he had been noticing increasing difficulty reading with his glasses on. So after many years of spectacle wear, he was keen for a change.
Prior to this discussion he had a consultation for Laser refractive surgery, and unfortunately he had been diagnosed with “thin corneas”, making him unsuitable for laser surgery.
In technical terms he suffered from myopia (short-sightedness) and earlier presbyopia (loss of new focus).
So to get rid of his glasses and being unsuitable for Laser surgery, what were his options?
- Overnight contact lens wear
- Multi-focal spectacle lenses, which of course meant glasses, which he was sick of wearing.
- Ortho-K overnight lens wear

TH was just not happy about continuing with glasses, and he was concerned about comfort problems with contact lenses, due to his long hours in air-conditioning and working on a computer.
The solution TH chose was his Ortho-K treatment which he has now been enjoying for well over 2 years. Now the treatment for TH was a solution for both of his vision problems, in that his distance and near vision requirements are met with a mono-vision correction (that is, his right eye is better corrected for distance, whilst his left eye is better corrected for reading).
TH has discovered the freedom that he wanted without his prescription glasses, and enjoys being able to wear fashion and sports sunglasses.
