So do your glasses or contact lenses get in the way of your game?

Here we review the case of RB, who is a 23 year old professional golfer. Due a low-level of myopia (which is the technical term for short-sightedness), RB uses glasses and prescription sunglasses.

He has noticed difficulties with clear vision, especially on overcast or low light days, while wearing his glasses or sunglasses. It doesn't help in his quest for an ever improving game.

So what options can he really consider to try and improve his current vision concerns?

  • He could just update his glasses and sunglasses to a new prescription.
The downside here could be some peripheral vision compromise and distortion with these spectacle lenses (that is, his vision either side if he is looking straight ahead could be a bit distorted).
  • Both Daily soft contact lens and Continuous wear soft contact lens are definite options.
However, as RB obviously plays golf outdoors, airborne irritants such as wind and dust can complicate comfort and vision with contact lens wear. So this could put him back to where he currently is, with fluctuations in vision during a game just not being acceptable.
  • RB’s short-sightedness (or low level of myopia) rules out his suitability for possible Laser refractive surgery.
  • His final option, which he chose to move forward with, was Ortho-K.

At the date of writing, RB has been successfully wearing his Ortho-K treatment for some 8 months.
And as he now has a sunglasses sponsor (one of the benefits of being professional!), he enjoys the flexibility of wearing a range of sports sunglasses with tints to suit the changing weather/light conditions.

Now you may not be a golfer, but you may enjoy being involved in another sport or activity and have similar issues with your vision (and not necessarily just short-sightedness).

It may just be a lifestyle thing, and you really want to be able to use off-the-shelf sunglasses rather than going through the frustrations of Prescription glasses and sunglasses.

It’s worth seeing if Ortho-K is a solution for you, isn’t it?
