Uncomfortable Contacts

Forget Your Uncomfortable Contacts, You Have a Choice!

Here we have the example of KC, who was a 34-year-old financial planner who likes to keep active with his son. Their common sporting interests included surfing, soccer and backyard footy. KC suffers from myopia (short-sightedness) and astigmatism, and at that stage was using 30 day continuous wear (Silicon Hydrogel) soft contact lenses.

He came to a consultation due to fluctuating vision with his then contact lenses, and overall reduction in comfort with contacts over the previous few months. The diagnosis was that KC had developed an allergic response to soft contact lenses (also known as GPC), hence the comfort problems with the lenses.

To overcome the allergic response to his contact lenses, it meant that KC had to discontinue contact lens wear for several weeks to allow the GPC to settle. During this time he returned to wearing spectacles.

Once the allergy issues had settled, KC was offered the following options:

  • Cease contact lens wear and continue with glasses (which did not suit his lifestyle at that time).
  • One-Day contact lenses
  • Laser refractive surgery
  • Ortho-K Overnight.

KC decided that Ortho-K best suited his overall lifestyle, as he was able to achieve good day-time vision without the hassle of glasses, or the irritation of a contact lens. It was also non-surgical and cost-effective.
